When scientists communicate and collaborate, we all benefit from the results. By facilitating this communication and collaboration, the Global Young Academy is improving how young researchers from around the globe work together on tackling the world's most pressing questions in science.
LabXchange is excited to welcome the Global Young Academy to our platform and include their excellent learning resources about science communication in our library. Below, hear from Beate Wagner, managing director at the Global Young Academy, to learn more about the organization's work.
The Global Young Academy (GYA) is an independent academy of outstanding early- to mid-career researchers that aims to give a voice to young scientists worldwide. The GYA develops, connects, and mobilizes scientific talent across six continents to engage in interdisciplinary, intergenerational, and international dialogue.
GYA members and alumni hail from over 100 countries, creating a truly global network of young scientific leaders that meets for an Annual General Meeting each year in a new country, with the aim of alternating between low- and high-income countries. In 2025 we met in Hyderabad, India; in 2026, in Bremen, Germany; in 2027, in Yogakarta, Indonesia.
Science education and outreach are one of the pillars of GYA activity. The GYA recognizes that addressing global challenges requires scientists who can communicate across cultures, disciplines, and generations, and who can inspire and engage youth and the public. GYA members are deeply motivated by our vision of science for all; science for the future.
We take great pride in our content advocating for equitable and supportive research systems. This includes work on Open Science, scientific excellence and measurement, support for women in science and gender equality, and efforts to understand the conditions facing early-career researchers across world regions.
Because science education has always been a pillar of our mission, we are also proud of our resources promoting youth science communication and citizen science. These materials help connect scientific knowledge to learners and educators across continents.
Content like our Science with Society videos can be used to understand real-world global science challenges, while science policy and diplomacy can be explored using the GYA’s Science Advice Resource Centre.
Upcoming and ongoing initiatives include our 2026 GYA Annual General Meeting and International Conference: “Machine Intelligence for Society and for all Sciences” in Bremen, Germany, which will include a Falling Walls event.
We will also deepen our collaborations with international partner organizations, such as the UN Secretary General’s Scientific Advisory Board, the InterAcademy Partnership, and the International Science Council, as well as ongoing support of National Young Academies worldwide.
