Collaborator Spotlight: Exploring Geoscience with The Geological Society

February 18, 2026

What is geoscience? This is the central question that the Geological Society explores through their educational resources covering all things Earth and planetary science. In particular, their This is Geoscience campaign aims to show the true breadth of the field and highlight the many careers that utilize geoscience today.

LabXchange is excited to announce the addition of resources from the Geological Society to our platform! Below, hear from Ashley Akingbade, senior education officer at the Geological Society, to learn more about the Society's work.

What does The Geological Society do?

The Geological Society supports and informs scientists and the general public by helping to improve knowledge and understanding of geoscience, as well as promoting professional excellence and ethical standards.

We do this through publishing, library and information services, scientific conferences and training, education activities, and professional and academic accreditation. We also provide impartial scientific information and evidence to support policy-making and public discussions about the challenges facing humanity.

This is Geoscience aims to reframe the public understanding of geoscience and inspire future geoscientists.

What's one fun fact that LabXchange users should know about your lab?

We are the oldest geological society in the world and have been around for over 200 years!

What initially inspired you to work in science education? What keeps you motivated?

When I was growing up, I always loved volcanoes. I was fascinated by how they worked and that led me to study geography. After I got my masters, I began working at a Special Education Needs (SEN) school and this really highlighted me the importance of accessible education. Geoscience means so much to me and it is an honour to share its importance with young people and the public in general.

Which content are you most proud of?

I would say I am most proud of our Geoscience for the Future poster. The poster highlights a range of Geoscience job sectors and which sustainable development goals they support. Not only is it wonderful to look at, but it also conveys a wealth of information in just one poster. It has also been translated into over 20 languages and counting. Knowing that they are being used all over the world is really heartwarming.

How can learners and educators best use your resources?

Our resources can be used in a multitude of ways. They can be used to help plan lessons, as part of lessons, or to extend learning. They can also be used to support independent study and revision.

What advice would you give to young people interested in pursuing a future in science?

I think people have a preconceived idea about the sort of person who works in geoscience or science in general, and that is really not the case. Science is for everyone, as long as you have an interest you are more than welcome!

Finally, what’s next for The Geological Society?

We recently launched the This is Geoscience campaign, our new long-term public awareness campaign to reframe public understanding of geoscience and inspire the next generation of geoscientists.

The campaign aims to address misconceptions, broaden participation, and showcase the critical importance of geoscience in tackling global challenges, from climate change and natural hazard mitigation to sustainable resource management and the energy transition. It has been incredible to work on, and I am excited for its future.
