Collaborator Spotlight: Demystifying the Natural World with Nature Clearly

LabXchange is excited to announce our new collaboration with Nature Clearly, whose biology- and botany-themed videos are now available on our platform!

Below, hear from Lucie Gimmel, creator of Nature Clearly, to learn more about their excellent learning resources.

What does Nature Clearly do?

I create videos explaining often-difficult biological concepts through real-life examples of everyday observations. My videos are visually very rich, as I am a visual learner myself and believe that clear visual examples are crucial for understanding difficult concepts. I am a passionate botanist, and this is reflected in my content, which is predominantly botanical. But I love insects as well! ;)

What's one fun fact that LabXchange users should know about your organization?

I always felt very insecure about my voice and my accent (I am not a native English speaker), so much so that I actually made my husband narrate the first few videos. After I finally published videos in my voice, I got, very unexpectedly, a lot of great feedback referring to my voice. This motivated me to continue narrating my videos myself and even to start a podcast! Just 3 years ago, this would have been totally unimaginable to me.

What motivates you to work in science education?

I have been passionate about biology (mainly about botany) ever since I was a small child. Throughout my studies, from elementary school all the way to university, I always left classes with many unanswered questions. We were taught to memorize instead of fully understand, so even though I had very good grades, I never felt like I really “got it,” and I always wanted to know more and understand better. This, along with my belief that the curriculum topics are taught in the wrong order and in isolation, instead of “connecting it all,” led to my dismay with the educational system and eventually made me not pursue my higher education any longer.

I started publishing my content to hopefully be that teacher to others that I wanted to have as a student myself. Getting feedback from people who say they had trouble understanding material in their class but now they do thanks to my videos, or from teachers who include my videos in their classes, is extremely gratifying and motivational. Biology is endless fun, and I wish for students to be excited and curious about it and not discouraged just because they were taught “wrong.”

Which content are you most proud of?

I have to say that I am quite proud of my very first video about the gymnosperm life cycle, where I show pine cone development as an example. It took me a very long time to publish this video, as I was very nervous about putting myself out there, but to this day, this video represents, in the best way, the essence of what this channel is about.

How can learners and educators best use your content?

As I cover many popular curriculum topics, students can use my videos to help them understand concepts that are notoriously difficult to “get.” I focus on everyday observations as well, so anybody interested in natural history will benefit from my content by learning about things they commonly see around them. And, of course, there are the plant identification videos for all the botany enthusiasts!

What do you have planned for the future?

Starting in October, I'm rolling out the Nature Clearly podcast, where I will be getting into more “chatty” topics, and I can't wait for people to hear the first episode!

A major project that I've been working on for a while will be coming out next year, but that's still a secret for now! ;)
