How safe is your lab space? The Laboratory Safety Institute (LSI) aims to help scientists keep safety front of mind while working in the lab. Offering a variety of educational resources about lab safety—as well as safety courses for educators—LSI hopes to make working in a lab safer for everyone.
To learn more about their work, we spoke with LSI Director of Educational Content Elizabeth Braun, PhD.
The Laboratory Safety Institute is a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering people to practice safer science worldwide. We envision a world where safer science is intrinsic to education, work, and life.
Over the past 45 years, we have taught courses to more than 100,000 people in 30 countries.
I know from firsthand experience the scary lack of safety programs in many school systems. I love opening eyes with real-life stories, and seeing real change in organizational safety culture.
I’m very proud of our Safer Science™ Masterclass—a webinar series for teachers of all types to integrate safety in their daily habits and class curricula.
Changing organizational safety culture can be a daunting task, but our Safer Science Self-Assessment is a great place to start. Answer a few questions to gauge the current state of safety in your organization in six key areas: professional development, administrative controls, curriculum & instruction, facilities, materials management, and sustainability. Our comprehensive program offers tons of resources every step of the way to close the gaps.
We are updating and expanding our online course offerings and our library of content to meet the evolving challenges faced by today’s researchers and teachers. In 2025, we will offer a new “Got DCM?” workshop series to help organizations comply with the new EPA rules on methylene chloride. We also plan to build on the success of last year’s Safer Science™ Summit for K-12 teachers in Cincinnati, expanding the program to major cities throughout the country.
