‍Foundational Concepts and Techniques in Biotechnology is a cluster of free remote learning resources for biotechnology built by LabXchange and the Amgen Biotech Experience (ABE). The cluster is now available in Arabic, Chinese (Simplified), Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Brazilian Portuguese, Latin American Spanish, Turkish, Ukrainian, and Zulu.

Based on the accomplished Amgen Biotech Experience program, now celebrating its 30th anniversary, the cluster exposes learners to key concepts and lab procedures in biotechnology through 11 unique digital pathways. These pathways include virtual lab simulations, animations, and videos to make learning accessible, interactive, and fun.

Foundational Concepts and Techniques in Biotechnology was created at Harvard University’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences with support from the Amgen Foundation. The cluster includes content from leading organizations, including the Concord Consortium, Khan Academy, Wellcome Genome Campus, Science IRL, and iBiology.

The goal of the cluster is to encourage learners to explore the field of biotechnology. In the virtual lab, learners can create a recombinant plasmid, and express and purify a protein of interest. Educators and learners can also use the cluster as part of a hybrid ABE experience. Details for this implementation are in the individual pathway descriptions.
