June: Visitors, Workshops, and Lots of Science

Last month, we publicly announced ourselves to the world. Since then we have heard from many of you and we hope to hear from even more! In the meantime, we want to share some highlights from this June. And get you excited about our plans for the rest of the summer!

Behind the Scenes: June Edition

  • LabXchange hosts a teacher workshop in June to discuss key user features on the platform, while skyping Technical Product Owner, Ian Saunder all the way from Cape Town, South Africa!
  • Sven, Carly and Laya have been working on developing video content focused on virology and tissue culture. Here is an inside look at our most recent work:

Time for a June Deep Dive!

LabXchange, and Amgen Biotechnology Experience (ABE)

On Monday, June 4th, Eduardo Cetlin visited the classroom of first-year ABE teacher Gavin Smith at the John D. O’Bryant High School in Boston. In under one hour, everyone in the classroom, including the adults, was a teacher and a learner.

“Mr. Smith, are we doing a lab today?” Micropipettes, gel boxes, tips, and tubes of various colors were out on the lab benches. This lab equipment was extremely familiar to the students. But the guests in the classroom were not. The students, eager to know what was about to happen, waited for Gavin to set the stage.

Gavin introduced Alia, the LabXchange Secondary School Implementation Coordinator and ABE Program Coordinator, but not with such words.

“I know there are a lot of people in the room. Don’t worry about them. It’s only me, you, and Mr. Smith,” said Alia. Gavin and Alia planned to introduce the ABE Program to the students by doing a laboratory focused on micropipetting and gel electrophoresis.

Students practice with micropipettes. Gavin’s 9th grade biology students instantly demonstrated their micropipetting skills and biotechnology knowledge.

But how does learning to micropipette relate to the global field of biotechnology?

Gavin explained to his students that he committed three days of his summer last year to being trained in the ABE program. Just so that he could give his students a novel opportunity.

“As a teacher, it has always been important for me to take advantage of any available opportunities to expose my students to the fields of the life sciences. The ABE Program seemed perfect so I seized the day, as they say.”

Gavin’s drive to expose his students to scientific experiences coincides with one of the main goals of LabXchange: accessibility.

Bringing such novel opportunities to Gavin’s classroom, as well as a global audience is not just important but is necessary. With this accessibility comes the power to help students develop the skills necessary to excel in not only the sciences, but in tomorrow’s future.

What’s Coming Up Next?

It’s time to hear from the experts themselves. This summer’s guest writers are marketing specialists, technology innovators, and design connoisseurs.

Establishing Who WE Are

Want to find out more about what makes LabXchange so different? Hear it from the experts–Waggener Edstrom Communications (WE). Their team is building the LabXchange identity by creating a guide that will ultimately shape the entire look of our platform and brand. WE will spill all the details in their guest blog coming up next!

Behind the Technology with Braden MacDonald

Curious about how LabXchange is exploring new technological frontiers? OpenCraft CTO Braden MacDonald will shed some light on the architectural infrastructure of our platform. And explain what really makes us the future of science education.

Virtual Labs– let’s take a look!

There has been plenty of talk about our virtual lab simulations, but what are they? Digital learning agency Hubble Studios will open up about simulation design, and offer a sneak peak!
